The Correct Use Of ‘A’ And ‘AN’

The choice Between ‘a’ and ‘an’ is determined by sound. ‘AN’ is used before a noun, beginning with a vowel sound ( a, e, i, o, u),

For example, An Orange, An Umbrella etc,

But Before The words which do not have a vowel sound, ‘a’ is used,

For Example, A Boy, A Woman, A Hole ETC

Correct Use Of ‘The’ Article

1.    ‘The’ is Something used to indicate a particular Kind; For Example “ The Lion is the king”   (Here we can see that One individual represents the whole race)

Note:- The Two nouns man and woman, when used in a general sense to denote the whole class or kind, never take a article, For Example “ Woman is Man’s Friend”

2. When ‘The’ is Placed before a common noun, it sometimes gives the meaning of an abstract noun, For Example “ He Allowed the father in him to be ruled by the judge”

3. As an Exception, the following kinds of proper nouns take a definite articles before them

  • Names Of Rive, For example “The Indus” , “The Ravi”, The Jhelum” Etc
  • Names Of Islands, For example “ The East indies”
  • Names of Ranges
  • Names Of Gulf
  • Names Of countries
  • Names of Classics
  • Names Of Things That are Unique

4. ‘The’ is Also Used Superlatives, Before an adjectives, With Comparatives

What are Articles? And Some General Rules Of Articles

‘A’, ‘an’ and ‘The’ are called Articles. Actually they are demonstrative adjectives, and Most of the Students feel a lot of trouble in their Correct use.

‘A’ and ‘An’ are Called indefinite articles, and ‘The’ is Definite Article.

Some General Rules

There are Three Fundamental rules for the use of articles:

1. No Articles is used before a noun when it is used in an abstract or general sense; as

  •          Honesty is the Best Policy
  •          Man  Is Mortal

2.  A definite Article is placed before a noun which is particular, alone of its kind, or, is separated by definition from other similar nouns; as,

  •         The Sun Has Risen
  •         The Boy I met in the street, is my brother

3.  An indefinite article is Placed before a noun that expresses something which is individual but not selected or distinguished; as

  •         A Boy Gave me This Book
  •         He has given me an Application
